Emergency Dental Care in the Bronx

Emergency Dental Care

At Morris Park Dental of the Bronx, we’ve been addressing dental emergencies for over 40 years. Some dental emergencies can include a toothache, abscess, cavities, infections, and chipped or broken teeth. If not treated immediately, some dental emergencies can cost you a tooth or threaten your health by increasing your risk for diabetes, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. Seemingly small problems can turn into large ones when left untreated. It’s important to know the difference between standard dental issues, which can wait, and an emergency that should be addressed as quickly as possible. Our team readily provides emergency dental care in the Bronx.

What is a Dental Emergency?

To help determine if you have a dental emergency, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you in severe pain?
  • Are you bleeding?
  • Do you have loose teeth or have you lost a tooth? Adults should never have loose teeth.
  • Do you have an abscess?
  • Has your tooth gone numb? This could mean the infection has spread to the root of the tooth.
  • Is your jaw swollen?
  • Do you have a sore that isn’t healing?
  • Do you have constant headaches?
  • Does your mouth taste like metal? This could mean you have a loose filling.

Answering yes to any of these questions means you may have a dental emergency.

Common Types of Dental Emergencies in the Bronx

Knocked-Out Tooth: If you act quickly enough, our experienced dentists might be able to reinsert your tooth. If your tooth is knocked out, do not touch the root. Rinse the tooth off carefully, taking care not to scrub it. If possible, reinsert the tooth into the socket. If this isn’t possible, place the tooth in a cup of milk. Contact our office as quickly as possible for emergency dental care.

Chipped or Broken Tooth: Teeth can chip or break when eating food that is too hard, as a result of a fall, or any other kind of accident. If the chip isn’t severe and isn’t causing pain, it can wait a few days. You’ll want to be careful when eating so that you don’t chip it more. At our office, we can smooth the chip out and add composite filling material if necessary.

For a more severely chipped or broken tooth, you should apply gentle pressure to stop any bleeding. Clean your mouth by rinsing with warm water. Use a cold compress to reduce swelling and take acetaminophen (Tylenol). We don’t recommend aspirin because it thins the blood and can make you bleed more, potentially causing other issues. Call our office immediately.

Abscessed Tooth: A dental abscess is a painful infection usually found at the root of the tooth. Symptoms of an abscessed tooth range from fever to tender lymph nodes to swelling of the glands in the neck to a persistent toothache to a foul taste in your mouth. Again, this is something that should be treated right away.
