We have attempted to reach out to each of our patients who missed their routine dental appointments between March and June, but please give us a call if you are overdue for treatment. Delays in routine treatment can result in the spread or worsening of decay or infection, and may cause other health issues.

We have been safely seeing patients for regular cleanings and routine dental treatment in our office since June. Dental offices are among the safest health care facilities, and dental care remains an essential health care service.

Routine dental visits are important because they allow your doctor and hygienist to:

  • detect and treat any level of gingivitis or gum disease
  • screen for oral cancer and other signs of oral disease
  • detect early indications of disease and plan for any necessary preventive dentistry

Morris Park Dental is dedicated to ensuring the safety and peace of mind of all of our patients and team members. To that effect, we have added a number of new safety measures in our practice. To read more about these protocols, please visit our COVID-19 Patient Health page.

We look forward to seeing you at your next dental visit, and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we are taking to keep you, and every patient and staff member, safe at our practice. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at 718-377-6453 with any questions, and to schedule your next dental visit.

Wishing you good health and smiles from all of us at Morris Park Dental.

Morris Park Dental is dedicated to ensuring the safety and peace of mind of all of our patients and team members. In addition to the strict disinfection and sterilization protocols we have always used, our office has implemented a number of new policies and protocols designed to best protect both our patients and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • We ask that you wear a mask to our office in accordance with NY State guidelines and use the complimentary hand sanitizer station next to the front desk on your arrival.
  • A temperature screening will be completed at check-in. Anyone presenting with a fever of 100 degrees F will need to be rescheduled in accordance with CDC guidelines.
  • Our office will provide a health questionnaire to identify any patients who have traveled, are experiencing flu-like symptoms, or have been around others who have had symptoms.
  • We have temporarily removed all magazines from the waiting area and operatories.
  • We love siblings and visitors at our practice but during this time we ask that you limit extra companions during your visit. Only patients with an appointment will be permitted inside our office, unless the patient is a minor or an adult requiring assistance, in which case we ask that only one adult accompany that patient.
  • Appointment times will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients, therefore our team may reach out to you to modify the time of your existing appointment.
  • You will be asked to rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash prior to treatment.
  • We are following new sterilization and protective guidelines to ensure the safety of all our patients and staff members. Our doctors and assistants will be wearing more personal protective equipment than they have in the past in accordance with these guidelines, and we will be taking additional steps when cleaning rooms in between patients.
  • We will do our best to allow greater time between patients to reduce waiting times for you, as well as to reduce the number of patients in the reception area at any one time.

What You Can Do to Protect Yourself:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and dispose of tissues after use.
  • Disinfect frequently-touched surfaces.
  • Learn more by visiting the CDC website.

Does your loved one snore? Get your loved one, and your relationship, the help they need!

Having a bed partner with a sleep disorder such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea can negatively impact your sleep as well as theirs. According to researchers, many couples don’t sleep in the same bed as their partners anymore due to snoring, affecting their intimacy, happiness, and quality of life.

Severe snoring or Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a life threatening medical issue which has been linked to other health problems such as Heart Disease, Hypertension (High Blood Pressure), Diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease due to oxygen deprivation. Chronic Fatigue from poor sleep also increases one’s risks of having automobile and work-related accidents.

Dentists can be the first to recognize signs of sleep apnea, and therefore have the ability not only to save a life, but to also save a relationship when we screen and treat our patients for sleep related breathing disorders like Obstructive Sleep Apnea. For many patients an oral appliance or mouthguard can be made to open the airway and improve breathing, effectively reducing snoring and sleep apnea without a cumbersome face mask.

If you or your partner snores, give us a call at 718-DR-SMILE or request an appointment below for a sleep apnea consultation with Dr. Elena Holtzman, who is specially certified in Sleep Apnea Treatment.

Studies suggest that people suffering from sleep-disordered breathing and resulting oxygen deprivation have an increased risk of developing cancer. Even worse, they may be up to five times more likely to die from the disease. This is because the lack of oxygen caused by Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) can be a catalyst for a process called neovascularization (the creation of new blood vessels), leading to new blood supplies that encourages tumor growth.

Symptoms of both oral cancer and sleep apnea should be screened for everyone, especially for heavy drinkers and tobacco users. Smoking, of course, is known for its carcinogenic properties, but perhaps more surprising is that around 70% of people diagnosed with oral cancer are heavy drinkers. Alcohol use is known to cause apneic events by relaxing muscles in the airway (this is particularly dangerous when people use alcohol to help get to sleep due to an already existing issue with sleep apnea). Irritation from cigarettes and other forms of tobacco may also cause airway inflammation which affects your ability to breathe easily.

Our doctors at Morris Park Dental screen all new patients for Obstructive Sleep Apnea as well as Oral Cancer as part of our comprehensive examinations. Early detection can add YEARS to your lifespan while significantly improving quality of life, and both OSA and Oral Cancer can exhibit symptoms that can be easily recognized during a regular check-up.

So what are you waiting for? Schedule your check-up and screening with Dr. Elena Holtzman today and find out more about how snoring or sleep apnea could be negatively impacting your health.

Is your smile supported by strong, healthy gums? With gum disease now linked to larger health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis and dementia, keeping your gums in excellent condition is critical for your overall health and well-being.

For gums that glow, make sure these key practices are part of your dental routine:

  • Brush along the gum line in small circular patterns to loosen plaque build-up
  • Floss against the shape of each tooth to dislodge food particles swept into the gum line
  • Use an anti-microbial mouthwash after brushing and flossing to minimize oral bacteria
  • Try a waterpik for gentle irrigation of hard to reach areas
  • And schedule your regular professional cleanings to tackle hardened build-up in hard-to-reach areas and prevent disease and bone loss. Swelling, inflammation, and bleeding gums are signs of disease which indicate that your gums are in need professional attention.

Give us a call today at 718-377-6453 to schedule your professional cleaning with one of our fabulous hygienists and find out all the ways we can help you smile!

Can you believe summer’s almost over? As you and your child stock up on school supplies, remember these simple ways to keep your child’s smile at its best once school is in session:

  • Fill the lunch box with nutritious, dental-friendly foods like apples, celery, yogurt and milk which are good for the body but also promote oral health.
  • Pack a water bottle instead of juice to limit sugar intake, inhibit oral bacteria growth and maintain a healthy oral pH.
  • Have a mouthguard ready to protect your child’s smile during sports and gym activities.
  • Schedule an orthodontic consultation to ensure that the teeth are aligned properly. Poorly aligned teeth can cause other health problems, or be a sign of sleep problems or unhealthy oral habits.
  • Put a small toothbrush and toothpaste in your child’s backpack to use after lunch. This is especially important for children in braces in order to avoid cavities and other complications after removal of braces.
  • College age kids should also be seen before going back to school in the Fall to avoid any interruptions or distractions from their studies during the school year.

It is always easier to get your child’s dental check-up completed before the first school bell rings, but our schedule fills up fast, so give us a call at 718-377-6453 to reserve your child’s check-up appointment today.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) can impact men, women and even children, however studies have demonstrated that men are afflicted at significantly higher rates. Individuals with OSA have increased risk of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, depression, and premature death.

What You Should Know:

  • Men are two to three times more likely than women to suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Men are more likely to experience the “classic” symptoms of OSA such as excessively loud snoring, gasping in the middle of the night, and daily fatigue (while women may display other symptoms)
  • Hypoxia (insufficient oxygen) is also known to cause a decreased testosterone level, low sperm count, and erectile dysfunction
  • Other conditions related to OSA that affect men at higher rates include heart disease, which causes 1 in 4 male deaths per year in the United States alone
  • Sleep Apnea can have a significant effect on mood and mental health. Lack of sleep in general takes its own psychological toll on individuals. Some studies suggest that more than 40 percent of people with OSA display depressive symptoms. Furthermore, isolation from your partner due to snoring causes many sleep apnea sufferers to sleep alone and become socially isolated, as well. These findings are especially concerning as depression and personal stress are underdiagnosed and frequently ignored in men.

There is Hope:
Early treatment and intervention can have a significant effect in alleviating and even completely treating these health issues. While the primary treatment for sleep apnea has always been a CPAP machine, which is a bulky oxygen mask worn at night, this is no longer your only option for treatment. A nightguard-type oral appliance has been proven extremely effective in treating sleep apnea, and can be made from simple dental impressions in our office.

Give us a call at 718-DR-SMILE to schedule a Sleep Apnea consultation with Dr. Elena Holtzman, a trained oral sleep apnea appliance provider.

Did you know that 120 million Americans are missing at least 1 tooth? Millions of people lose their teeth every year because of trauma, heredity, gum disease (periodontitis) and decay. In fact, nearly 1 in 5 of adults aged 65 or older have lost all of their teeth. Dental implants can be used to replace individual or multiple missing teeth. As a board-certified prosthodontist, Dr. Natalie Baker specializes in the restoration and replacement of damaged or missing teeth.

Missing teeth can severely impact an individual’s self-confidence, job prospects, and ability to chew properly. Loose and ill-fitting partials or dentures can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. Replacing missing teeth with a dental prosthesis can restore a person’s ability to eat and speak, promotes self esteem, and reduces social isolation, factors which contribute to a person’s emotional and physical well-being.

Dental implants are a durable and long-term solution for the replacement of missing teeth or the stabilization of new or existing dentures. Dental implants have been used for over 40 years, and with proper care and oral hygiene, can last a lifetime.

Prosthodontists are uniquely qualified to replace missing teeth due to extensive training using state of the art technology and procedures. Prosthodontists are the most highly trained restorative dentists in the country, practicing evidence based dentistry, which is the reason why you should choose a specialist when it comes to your smile.

Our New Teeth in 1 Day procedure can give you those beautiful permanent teeth in just a few hours. This procedure will help you look years younger, regain your ability to eat all types of foods, and speak with confidence. We can also put you to sleep with in office sedation so that you can wake up to a brand new smile!

Are you or someone you know missing all or some of their teeth? Give us a call at 718-DR-SMILE and schedule a missing tooth consultation with Dr. Natalie Baker of Morris Park Dental in the Bronx.

Your Smile: Our Specialty.

If you snore, you may have Sleep Apnea.

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. If you snore loudly and feel tired even after a full night’s sleep, you might have sleep apnea.

Left untreated, sleep apnea can have serious and life-shortening consequences: high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, automobile accidents caused by falling asleep at the wheel, diabetes, depression, and other ailments.

Oral appliances can be effective in the treatment of mild to moderate sleep apnea and also provide a treatment alternative for patients with severe OSA who cannot or will not tolerate positive airway pressure therapy (CPAP).

Dr. Elena Holtzman is specially trained in treating patients with sleep apnea and can help you find the treatment for snoring that is right for you.

Give us a call at 718-DR-SMILE to schedule your sleep apnea consultation with Dr. Holtzman.
